Heatstroke Awareness

New York City is at its hottest in the summertime and that means outdoor workers could be at risk of heatstroke or other health problems caused by the sun. Some disorders that are caused by the sun include sunburn, heat cramps, heat exhaustion, and heatstroke. Heatstroke is the most severe of these and requires immediate medical attention.

What is Heatstroke?

Heatstroke occurs when your body overheats as a result of prolonged exposure to high temperatures or physical exertion in the heat. This heat injury can occur when your body temperature reaches 106 degrees or higher. Symptoms include:

  • High Body Temperature
  • Hot & Dry Skin
  • Rapid, Strong Pulse
  • Possible Unconsciousness
  • Lack of Sweat

Heatstroke requires immediate medical treatment. If someone around you has heatstroke, contact the medic immediately if one is present onsite. If not, call 911 right away. Waiting to get medical attention can be fatal. Move the victim to a cooler environment and try a cool bath, sponge with cool water, or place ice packs or wet towels on the person to reduce body temperature. Remove the victim’s clothing and use fans or air conditioners.

How to Prevent Heatstroke

Workers in the construction industry are at risk for heatstroke because they typically spend many hours outdoors exposed to the heat and they have to perform tasks that can require a lot of physical exertion. If you work in the construction industry, here are some things you should do to help prevent heatstroke:

  • Wear loose fitting, lightweight clothing
  • Wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to prevent sunburn which affects your body’s ability to cool itself
  • Drink a lot of fluids but avoid alcoholic and caffeinated beverages
  • Try to avoid strenuous activity during the hottest parts of the day
  • Be aware of any medications or health conditions that could increase your risk of heatstroke
